He said, "Oh yes, you did laugh."

SCOOP: Why do you cover your mouth when you talk about sex?
HEIDI: Hygiene.

Watched the January 31 CNN debate on YouTube the night before Super Tuesday. It provided me with several opportunities to listen to "the cackle," you know, Hillary Clinton's famous horrible grating laugh.

It's...a laugh. It sounds like a woman, laughing.

I know my opinions will always be hopelessly unpopular; still, I wish everyone could, for the sake of their own blood pressure, find the sound of a woman laughing heartily to be beautiful, as I do. There are some vocal pitches in the world that I don't personally find aesthetically pleasing--and I don't, you know, consider it a judgment on anyone's character if they happen to have such a voice--but all Clinton sounds like to me is a woman who laughs out loud, and declines to cover her mouth.

Look, I've spent a hell of a lot of time listening to audiences, and I'm familiar with the kinds of laugh that make everyone around cover their ears and change seats. This ain't it. It's a full-voiced, infectious laugh, the kind you want to hear on opening night. I suppose that for some listeners, a female laugh pitched lower than a giggle is an unacceptable sound, but I can't get behind that.

If Hillary Clinton were my friend and came to one of my shows, I would know she was there without seeing her, and I would find her afterward and say, "I didn't know you were coming tonight, but as soon as we got that first laugh, I said, 'Oh good, there's Hillary.'" And she would laugh again.
