O, let America be America again-- The land that never has been yet-- Read the whole thing.
This is my favorite Fourth of July poem; the favorite prose is obvious. It irks me that I went through pretty near a whole lifetime and a decent education before I saw this by Langston Hughes, but better late than never.
And the song for 2008:
Doch für uns gibt es kein Klagen, ewig kann nicht Winter sein, einmal werden froh wir sagen: Heimat du bist wieder mein.
But for us there is no complaining, Winter will in time be past. One day we shall rise rejoicing. Homeland, dear, you're mine at last. Die Moorsoldaten, song from the concentraton camps (1933), still topical.
